Social Aggregation for Mental Health America

To observe May as Mental Health Month, Mental Health America (MHA) wanted to find ways to increase awareness and support for mental illness, along with creating a place for people to share anonymously what it’s like to live with mental illness. For help, MHA turned to Blue Water.

The Solution:

Blue Water designed and implemented a social feed platform called ‘Mental Illness Feels Like’, where posts are aggregated onto a social feed, allowing people to share their story through mainstream social media platforms while remaining anonymous. In addition, to keep the anonymous posting feature truly anonymous, the input was designed to not require any identifiable information to share the page viewer’s story. To drive engagement around the hashtag #MentalIllnessFeelsLike, Blue Water recommended using social media, email marketing, and website creative.

The Results:

By aggregating posts on a single page, visitors can now view shared stories by category such as depression, anxiety or bipolar. Users can also interact with others by ‘liking’ posts, responding through social media, or following a user’s story, helping increase awareness for mental illness. Since the April 2016 launch, the site has already received 8,000 unique views out of 9,535 page views, with an average time of 3:33 on the page. The campaign received over 10,000 tweets in May alone. ‘We wanted to hear real people explain what mental illnesses are like in their own words, and have been thrilled with the initial response,’ said Danielle Fritze, Dir. of Public Education & Visual Communications for Mental Health America.
